Sonic Sound Club shortlisted for national award

  • News

We’re delighted to be shortlisted for the Supporting People with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities Award at this year’s National Learning Disabilities and Autism Awards.

The awards take place on the 30 June 2023 and celebrate excellence in the support for people with learning disabilities.

Certitude’s Sonic Sound Club is amongst the shortlisted nominees for their innovative approach to Supporting People with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities. The band’s passion and commitment to exploring music in an inclusive and fun way has ensured that their weekly sessions have become a firm favourite amongst people we support. And, as witnessed at our recent More Than A Provider event in London, they always attract enthusiastic audience participation when performing live.

Stephen who regularly attends weekly Sonic Sound Club, says the sessions have been a life saver. His parents added;

“The zoom session is now a weekly highlight bringing together the playing of unusual instruments, action songs for everyone to join in, and the opportunity for every member to be included and encouraged to participate, no matter at what level their musical ability. We have been so impressed by the band’s warm personalities, their sense of fun, and the praise and encouragement of all musical efforts.”

Derek, who joined original members Jonny and Alyse during lockdown, said they were all surprised and honoured to have been nominated;

“The sessions have been a joy to be part of and everybody involved has worked really hard to make them work. Seeing people grow musically is the best thing ever! It has been a really natural process, and we’re looking forward to future projects.”

Original band member Jonny said the sessions are ‘pure joy’;

“My heart is lifted each week when we do Sonic Sound Club and this nomination is for everyone who comes to join us”

Fellow band member Alyse added

“Each week we discover the magical medicine of music and its power to create joy and connection indiscriminately. It is so liberating to be free to express our given capacity as musical beings!’

Congratulations to all of the nominees. Winners will be announced during the ceremony at the ICC in Birmingham, which will be attended by some of Sonic Sound Club members alongside their support workers and members of the band.
