Our Support a Skill programme encourages people we support to learn new skills. It could be a passion, an ongoing hobby or learning something completely new to them. We have had an influx of requests and as a result people have been on horticultural courses, bird watching, magician courses, extended their sewing skills and one person even recorded his own music demo in a studio.
We encourage the people we support to grow their own fruit, vegetables and herbs and to then get creative in the kitchen by using their homegrown produce in their cooking. Our ‘Garden to Plate’ project has boosted people’s mental health and wellbeing as well as supporting them to learn and develop new skills for a healthy lifestyle. Monies raised help us to purchase seeds, plants, gardening tools, soil and compost, cookware and utensils and ingredients.
The Gate supports adults with Learning Disabilities, autistic people and people with mental health support needs to develop as artists and musicians. Together with local partners and creative organisations, we’re supporting people to explore their individual creative talents, and to work together on collaborative projects with the local arts scene. This can include art shows, concerts, a book, a radio show, a music CD, or a theatre show - all to introduce their work to mainstream audiences.
Our Connect and Do Programme brings people together around the things they enjoy doing rather than a diagnosis. We provide a safe space for people where they can feel comfortable, creative and purposeful. The sessions are open to everyone in the community. There is a wide range of activities including, drawing, painting, jewellery making, print making, singing, experimenting with instruments and sound or writing stories or poems.
Stepping up is our bi-weekly kickabout club, which is hosted at Ruislip Goals in West London. The sessions have a regular turnout of 20-30 people per session. It’s a fantastic opportunity for people to come together and connect over a shared passion for football. The teams are led and coached by people we support who have professional coaching qualifications. These sessions are inclusive and open to all.
This can include transforming spare rooms into sensory rooms, or communal areas into relaxing hubs so people living together have opportunities to have a shared safe space. Beautiful things happen in these spaces; people create friendships, learn new skills, have increased social connections, have a space that meet their sensory needs but is also a space outside their bedroom where they can relax with family and friends.
